Ear cleaning

Ear cleaning is one of the most important parts of dog grooming. Regular ear examination is necessary for dogs as it helps in the identification of any kind of injury or infection in the early stages. The regular examination helps one access the cleanliness of a dog’s ear canal and the need for cleaning the ear. Some breeds are more prone to ear infection and thus require special attention for ear checking.  While examination any kind of discharge or odour might suggest the presence of infection in the ear.  If there is any kind of inflammation, redness, swelling or pain then consult a local veterinarian before initiating the cleaning process. 

As you all know the ear canal ends with an eardrum and have a complex structure which makes it difficult to expel any stuck object without any assistance. Any foreign object in the dog’s ear can be an irritant and a source of future infection. 

For ear cleaning one can use a good quality ear cleaner.  If the ear is having any inflammation or injury then do not use a cleanser containing Hydrogen peroxide and alcohol as it may cause irritation in the ear canal.  If a veterinarian finds any kind of ear infection then he can recommend a cleanser having anti-fungal or anti-bacterial properties.

Apart from a good quality cleanser, you may need cotton swabs, a gauge and some treats for cleaning the ear. Do not use Cotton bud or cotton tip for cleaning as it may cause damage to the earbud.  It may further push the debris into the ear canal. 

Step-by-Step Guide for Ear Cleaning

1. Make your dog sit in front of you with your rear leg placed between your legs. For large breeds make your dog stand sidewise near the wall and rear end in the corner of the room and stand on one of the sides. 

2. Hold the ear flap vertically so that the ear canal can be observed. Use another hand to hold the ear cleaning solution.

3. Apply some ear cleaning solution to the dog's ear. Do not put the tip of the bottle in the ear. After applying the cleaning solution clean the tip using cotton swabs to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria or fungus. 

4. Keeping the ear flap vertically, gently massage the base of the ear for 30-40 seconds. This will help spread of cleaning solution in the ear and break the debris. 

5. Use a cotton ball and gauze to wipe away debris from the inner part of the ear flap. Allow the dog to shake his head which will allow the remaining ear solution and debris to move out of the canal to the outer opening of the ear. Use a cotton ball to remove the debris from the outer canal. 

6. Provide a treat to the dog and wait for minutes before repeating the same process with another ear.

The eye is one of the sense organs of any living being and just like humans Pets also possess a risk of infection or irritation in the eyes because of multiple factors. So, in order to keep your dog cent per cent, fit and healthy, eye examination becomes one of the most essential routine exercises for owners and has to be performed from time to time in order to keep their eyes healthy and free from infection. Ignorance of this might lead to serious eye illness which can be threatening to them.

Eye Health: The Warning Signs:-

It's very important to regularly examine the eyes and look for the warning signs for any future implications. If the signs are identified earlier, it can be treated better. Dogs can have a varied range of eye problems just like in humans like Dry eyes, cataracts, conjunctivitis, cherry eye, glaucoma etc. 

There are many warning signs that can indicate that something is wrong with the dog’s eyes. It is not necessarily the final diagnosis but these signs can tell a lot about eye health. If the owner finds any of these warning signs then they should contact a veterinarian for a confirmatory diagnosis.  The most common warning signs are as follows:

• Tearing

• Redness

• Frequent Blinking or squinting

• Any kind of discharge from the eye (usually Yellow or Green) 

• Cloudiness (It may be quite common in old dogs)

This is really important because of skin folds near the eyes in certain breeds like Lhasa apso, Pekingese etc.  Note: Do not point the scissors towards the dog as it may be the cause of any injury. 

• Clean the area around the eyes on a daily basis with the help of cotton wipes or using eye wipes. Cleaning the eyes on a regular basis keeps it away from mucus. While cleaning with the eye keep the wipe or tip of eyewash away from the cornea to prevent any kind of injury. 

• While giving a bath to the dog always remember to rinse the shampoo as soon as it is applied as it may cause irritation and redness to the eyes. The tearless shampoo also can act as an irritant for dog eyes. 

• Some breeds tend to develop tear stains with time. Timely cleaning of tear stains is very important. It should be done once a week with cotton using eyewash or using eye wipes. 

• If the dog is going on a car ride make sure his head is inside the car while cruising as it might be the cause of injury due to some foreign particle. Observe the eye after every outdoor tour for any dirt or foreign particle and also for any of the above-mentioned warning signs. 

• If your dog is old then there are chances that the eye becomes cloudy due to age. It's normal but a routine veterinary examination can rule out any serious condition. 

• Even though proper care is taken, a routine veterinary examination is important to diagnose any kind of serious illness. How to Brush Your Dog:

Brushing is very important exercise to keep your dog coat healthy and shiny. It improves overall coat

health of dog and make them mentally healthy. It is the first step to properly take care of dog’s coat. In

this article we will study the step-by-step guide to properly brush dogs coat. 

Step1: General Handling:

It is very necessary to make your dog comfortable before you start brushing. This step should generally

start while your dog is still a puppy as early training is very easy rather than training while they are adult.

Start by patting and stroking different parts of their body, praise and award with treat to make them

calm and easy to handle. Start from patting them on chest are, shoulders, sides and gradually move

towards the back. Once they are comfortable try touching each leg, lift their paws slightly one by one

and gently touch the footpads and nails and also ears and under the chin. Most of the puppy will allow

you to do but if they are aggressive or over reacting best was to control them is by giving them treat of

their choice.

Step 2: Introduction with Brush:

Before introduction one must ensure to select right kind of Brush as per the coat of Dog. If you are a dog

owner than you are probably aware that dogs are curious and they will treat brush as a toy or anything

which is available to chew. So, it becomes important to associate Brush with something that is pleasant.

Start with introduction of Brush with Tasty Dog treat. Once he is comfortable with brush around reward

with dog treat so that he can cooperate during the process.

Step 3: Brushing Gently

One the Dog is comfortable and relaxed, start brushing lightly and gently on shoulder and chest areas. If

two or three times till the dog becomes completely comfortable with it.

If there are any mats, tangle or knots then do not put force to remove them as it may cause pain and

discomfort. Mats and Tangles should be carefully removed with right kind of scissors.

Brush occasionally in direction opposite to hair growth to check the skin condition and occurrence of

ticks, fleas and dirt.

This process might take more than one day as initially the dog might not get comfortable with it so

owner must halt the process and continue on other day. Rewarding each time can make some stubborn

dog comfortable within few days.

Note: This whole process should be done calmly and using soft hands. If dog is not cooperating than

one should not show any kind of aggression as it might lead to development of bad behavioral traits in

dogs. If after trying different brushing technique the dog is not cooperating than the final solution is to

consult a local Veterinarian or groomer for better advise.

Step 4: Treat for good Session

It is very important that the dog enjoys the session. Initially keep the session small and gradually

increasing the time session by session. To make it a pleasant exercise treat your dog with treat or

A shining and healthy coat is a sign of a healthy dog and brushing regularly with right guidance can help pet owner achieve it.  Owner should make sure the experience of brushing the dog should be comfortable and pleasant and should never be forceful

How Often to Brush Your Dog?

Frequency of Brushing your dogs varies from one dog to other. It depends on many factors like coat type, Length of hair, type of activities of dog etc.  Dog with different kind of coat require different type of tools for brushing the coat.  Regular monitoring of dog’s coat is required to understand the requirement of brushing. Tangling, dullness, Mats and dirt are some indications that the dog may require brushing. Brushing may take few minutes to hours depending upon type of condition and coat of the dog. 

Medium to Long haired dogs require more frequent brushing as compared to dogs with short hair as former are prone to Mats, Tangles and knots. Some dog breeds have very short hairs and might not be in need of brushing. Instead, occasional use of soft grooming glove is sufficient to remove loose hairs.

General Guide:

•  Smooth and Short Haired Dogs:  Brushing once fortnightly to remove loose hair is sufficient. Example: Labrador, Rottweiler etc. 

•  Short and Dense furred dogs: Brush once a week or 14 days. Example: German shepherd, Husky etc. 

•  Long Coat and double coated dogs:  Once or twice a week. Example: Golden retriever, Lhasa Apso etc. 

•  Puppies: It is very important to start training the puppies for grooming and make them feel comfortable about when they are just month old. This is very important exercise as this prepare your dog to be handled easily in future grooming sessions and even vet visit. 

•  Dog with outdoor activities: many dog owners take their dog out for swimming, play ground and into the woods. For such kind of dogs mild brushing after every visit is very important as it will remove any kind of dirt, leaves or insects attached to the dogs’ fur. Dogs those are into swimming should be cleaned with normal water and brushed to remove any kind of harmful objects from fur. 

What if dog is not brushed regularly?

Neglecting this exercise can have serious health implication on health of dogs. Dogs can become prone to many kinds of skin infections and allergies. Not Brushing your dogs may lead to Mats, Tangles and knots on their coat. Mats and knots tend to absorb moisture and become source of some serious skin infections. It causes skin irritation which can change the behavior of the dog. 

If a dog has excessive matting on the fur than it is advisable to take them to a good veterinarian or a registered grooming parlor for proper care.  A veterinarian or a groomer use specialized tools to remove mats and tangles which otherwise becomes difficult to remove by using normal household scissors. 

While grooming humans should observe the skin of the dog. Washing 

1. Start slowly with low pressure warm water. 

2. Brush your dog’s hair. This will make it easier for you to rinse and lather your pup up with shampoo.

3. Wash from the neck and shoulders down to the paws.

5. Apply the shampoo to the base of your dog’s skull. Avoiding his eyes, massage into a lather around his head and chest.

6. Rinse your dog thoroughly from head to tail until the water runs clear.
